Organic choices and Local suppliers, what more could you ask for? The inside seating is limited so takeout is your best bet. The Salad helpings are perfect to fill you up and keep you going. It is a little expensive compared to other downtown choices but worth it for local ingredients, and non processed food. Glad they finally opened!

I think this place is definitely over-priced for what you get. 2 salads for $20 & they were OK. Mine was noticeably smaller in lettuce volume compared to my boyfriends but by the time I noticed, I was too hungry to say anything. The options are limitless; there's definitely a smorgasbord of veggies and various toppings, but there are only a few "menu" salads to choose from...once you start getting into the "choose your own toppings" you're looking at a hefty salad bill! It's definitely the talk of the town though, as I saw tons of people holding their salad containers in the street (we were there during Arts Fest). I applaud them for offering healthy, veggie & vegan friendly fare, but I wasn't as bowled over by it as others. Only a few tables inside & outside so better to have a different spot to eat in mind than at the restaurant. Honestly, I'll probably go back though, because there aren't many places I can get vegan fare around.

The salad ingredients and dressings are delicious but the soups can be hit or miss. I've had the baked potato & buffalo chicken soups that were delicious, but also the French onion and the tomato soup which were horrible. The French onion didn't have croutons or mozzarella cheese & basically taste like onions in watery broth, and the tomato soup was so thick it was more of a sauce that could've been used for pasta.

Had a delicious salad of mesclun greens, cheese, cranberries and walnuts! EXCELLENT!!!

The Food: (Above Average) My intentions for going to Fiddlehead was to explore healthier meals around campus, which could still be delicious in the end. Fiddlehead did not disappoint! Visually, it reminds me of an upscale Subway with a plethora of ingredients laid out before you. Unlike Subway, Fiddlehead is more conscience about healthy ingredients and recommends combinations that all looked appetizing. I ordered an "Own It!" salad (custom salad) and choose a combination of Iceberg/Romaine Mix, Banana Peppers, Mushrooms, Hard Boiled Eggs, Feta Cheese, and Spicy Sriracha Vinaigrette. It was the best salad I ever had! Even though this is coming from someone who doesn't eat many salads, keep in mind that it is only because I was never really impressed or excited for salads. I am actually looking forward to having another salad from there. As a side note, although I have no proof on this claim, apparently the ingredients are acquired locally, and thus the freshness. The Atmosphere: (Average) The dining area is limited but comfortable and the inside of the restaurant is cozy (i.e. a nice escape from the crazy PSU winters). It kind of has a cozy cafe feel and the smells are natural and refreshing. The outside of the shop is always well maintained and inviting. If you are eating inside, I think it is appropriate for groups no larger than 3 people. The Price: (Above Average) As with most establishments that focus on natural ingredients and a large variety of salad combinations, the price tag just slightly pushes the limits for a self-sustaining college guy. For instance, my salad and a bottle of water cost around $8.50. HOWEVER, I must emphasize that the portions are very large and I will easily get 2 meals out of the salad. Also, the ingredients were remarkably fresh tasting. Therefore, I will actually say the pricing is just right for the location and audience. No more, no less! The Service: (Above Average) Again, using Subway as a comparison, the servers that prepared my salad actually looked like that had a beating heart and were, in fact, alive. They were quick in the preparation while attentively listening to my selection and used visibly clean tongs to mix up the salad. It was kind of fun to watch! At the end day, they were an above average bunch of line servers that made the most of a mundane job. Props! Overall: I found one of my new favorite eateries at PSU, where I can feel healthy about my food selection. It's a nice place to invite a friend while chatting and staying cozy. In fact, because the ingredients served here make for a light and fresh meal, it is probably great to come any time of year.

The reasonably priced cups and bowls of soup have been so various. Each we have tried have been delicious. Top vegan choices for me have been the 11 Bean, Hearty Bean, Carrot Curry, Tomato Basil and Sweet Potato. Other vegetarian options over the past weeks have included (v = vegan): Cream of Mushroom, Mushroom Bisque, Carmelized Onion & White Bean, Roasted Vegetable (v), Roasted Red Pepper with Cilantro Lime Cream as well as Spinach & Rice with Lemon (v). Grab it to go or sit, listen to the mellow music while taking advantage of the free Wifi. Fiddlehead is set up for a streamlined, green and healthy dining experience via counter service leading to a clear self-service station for utensils and drinks.

Just nearly finished what would have been a delicious salad here and suddenly noticed a FLY in it. I immediately informed the staff and it took a few flustered girls before the manager identified himself. After showing him the evidence he admitted that they've been having issues with their lettuce distributor. Knowing that this isn't the first case of fly in their food one would expect the use of a new distributor. In any case upon getting my refund and declining a new salad, I mentioned that this is completely unacceptable, to which he responded, "Unfortunately, it happens". Ok, so eat at your own risk, I suppose! Such a shame because it was a great salad but the lack of concern and initiative would never allow me to return.

I am the one of the owners of the aardvark kafe on W. College ave. I am a vegan and a vegan chef. I absolutely love what Fiddlehead is doing for the community by offering fresh and delicious foods! There are healthy options for all diets and lifestyles. The tomato basil soup was absolutely wonderful! You could taste the fresh ingredients and no flavor dominated another. It's nice to have some great homemade style soup (that I didn't have to cook haha) I would recommend Fiddlehead to anyone who is concerned about weight loss, maintaining weight or just looking for a fresh and delicious salad/soup etc. The owner and workers were very friendly and helpful when I asked about the ingredients in the soup to make sure it was vegan! Prices are more than fair and the atmosphere is modern, clean and friendly! Best of luck to you Fiddlehead! Whenever I get a day off and I'm wandering around downtown I'll definitely be by again for some great, fresh food!

After being stuck in town an extra day thanks to a cancelled flight, I knew I wanted to eat local for lunch. I was impressed with the portions of the salad, it was for lunch and I customized my own; but it was far larger than I anticipated and the kind of meal you'd take back to work with you if I actually lived here. The soups smelled amazing and gave me second thoughts about my salad choice. The sort of place I'd happily try again if I lived locally; as there is so much to like. It's a bit pricy for lunch, but that's not as much a negative as it is something to be aware of if you're not going to just have soup and a drink.

Went to Fiddlehead for the first time today. It's from the owners of Irving's so I had high expectations. They were most definitely fulfilled! Staff was quick and helpful. I got the Backyard BBQ salad and it was great. They ask you how much dressing you would like instead of just squirting a gallon on, that was a nice treat :) They are very much into "Buy Fresh Buy Local" as many of their ingredients are either made from scratch (breads, soups) or sourced from local farms (veggies, eggs). I love to see this and will pony up a few extra bucks for it. $9 for the salad isn't to expensive anyway. I need to try the soup for 5 stars...will edit post eventually. If you want cheap, frozen, garbage imported food...go to McDonalds! If you want a wholesome delicious salad or soup made from local ingredients, Fiddlehead fits the bill!

They have SO many toppings to choose from, and the salads are huge. Any one of their recommended combinations are delicious, but I highly recommend the Bob Cobb. I would highly recommend Fiddlehead as an option for students looking for healthier food options around campus.

Fiddlehead has a huge variety of delicious salad ingredients and they always have really interesting, different soup choices. I just wish they would offer a smaller salad size; I can't finish a giant $10 salad myself and salad doesn't keep all that well to eat the next day.

Definitely a great place for salad and soup lovers! I find it extremely difficult to eat healthy during the school year because everything you have around you here in State College is fast food, crappy dining hall food, fattening fast food downtown and at the hub, and all that nonsense. Sick of buying cheap and un-tasty salads at McLanahan's or some weird cafe on campus? Fiddlehead is the way to go. While I'm not too familiar with the soup menu, I have tried its salads and you have to option to put it together (but beware because you might go overboard and pay a lot!). The options are limitless and there's a plethora of types of...well, anything you can put into your mix. I really like the variety, especially the seasoned tofu because I LOVE tofu. The only complaint I can find about this place is the price. It is somewhat steep for a bowl of salad, but it's a pretty darn big bowl of salad. Workers are generally friendly but obviously inexperienced with the cash registers lol. Anyway, I enjoy coming here when I'm in the mood for some good, fresh salad (like 24/7). I recommend coming here.

The salads here are fairly expensive ($8-11), but considering they're made with very fresh, local ingredients and are big enough for two, I'd say it's worth it. My salad was delicious and actually provided salad for three meals, since I asked for the dressing on the side. The Chicken Fusilli soup was pretty good, not too salty like most places around here. I recommend getting the pasta on the side if you aren't planning on eating it right away. The girl working at the counter asked about that and it seemed odd at the time, but I understand now that the fresh pasta (from Fasta Ravioli) can get mushy if it sits in the soup for an hour. I can see how the other reviewer could say the soup was bad just because it didn't have strong flavors or enough fat, but the place is pretty health-conscious and probably didn't want to make a soup full of butter, cream and salt. If in doubt, just ask for a more detailed description of what you want before you order it. All in all, this is an interesting place because it offers tasty, fresh and local food, which is something State College lacks.

GREAT place for a quick and healthy lunch or dinner. I don't understand the hype about it being expensive. You are getting an enormous fresh salad for under $10. The choices are great and always look fresh. The upkeep of the establishment is fantastic. The soups are generally good, albeit a little salty sometimes. And the lemonade, especially the cucumber lemonade, is to die for.

The "best for you" food downtown! I actually crave their salads. I recommend the Bob Cobb. Something important to know that's not posted anywhere, is that you can swap out ingredients. Any veggies in a "named" salad can be swapped for any other. Same with the meats. The Bob Cobb is heavy on the good stuff - chicken, bacon, egg, and avocado plus veggies. I also swap out the dressing to the fiddlehead vinaigrette - delicious and not too heavy. Super paleo salad! These salads are big! Big enough to start at lunch and finish with dinner. Winner, winner chicken (on a salad) dinner.

Literally my favorite place ever! I wish I had one back home in Maryland! I always order the Backyard BBQ salad and they are huge salads! It is pricey but I'll always pay to for it! Their soups are delicious too! The ingredients are fresh and amazing. Some of the tossers don't put in as much as others but that's my only complaint! FAVORITE!!

Delicious salads. A bit pricey, but the salads are GIGANTIC. My recommendation is to split one salad per two people. There will still be leftovers, easily, and you will both be full.

  • H C.

Wow! What a nice departure from the fried foods typical to the area! The salads are a bit pricey, but are big enough that I can usually split it into two meals. The soups are also fantastic! Overall this is a top notch place.

By far the best place to get a salad in State College. Also, the best place to get robbed for a salad in state college. I get the Gaucho every time because it's delicious, but its like $11 for a salad! Us college kids don't have this kind of money. The mushroom soup is delicious as well, but only order it if you're willing to drop 15 bucks here. I personally prefer to go to Noodles & Company so I can save a few bucks, but when I'm in the mood to splurge on a great salad, Fiddlehead is the place.

Best salads in State College. You get what you pay for: a ton of fresh lettuce and delicious toppings. I always opt for olive oil and vinegar but have tried some of the other dressings and they're also good. You can ask them to do a mix of lettuce types for you and definitely get cracked pepper!

  • Angela M.

If you want a BOWL full of salad, this is your place. They've got a good selection of toppings and dressings, and they don't skimp on the portions. Sure, it's a $10 salad, but I feel that you actually get your money's worth thanks to their generosity, both in lettuce and in toppings. I was on a paleo diet when I visited, so I opted for the Bob Cobb, no cheese, with oil and vinegar dressing. My primary complaint is that the chunks of lettuce could be a little smaller, as I don't really want to have to use a plastic fork on iceberg lettuce. Friendly staff, clean space (though small), and efficient ordering process.

You can't beat a Fiddlehead salad. They are jam-packed full of fresh lettuce and other ingredients. I almost always get the Backyard BBQ, which is super filling, but what makes it so good is their dressing. Now, I'm not a dressing person. I never eat dressing anywhere. But Fiddlehead, I MUST always get the Avocado Lime dressing - it's delicious! I've tried to find a replacement so that I can have it at home, but nothing comes close. While it's a $10 salad, you can easily make it into 2 meals. Totally worth it!

Fresh ingredients, large portions, and affordable prices: the Trilemma restaurants around the world must grapple with. Well, for foodies striving to find this "impossible triangle" I have good news: Fiddlehead comes pretty close. Fiddlehead has a range of fresh ingredients for you to enjoy through either one of their standard menu salads or a "build your own" concoction (which includes greens, 4 toppings, and a dressing). I decided to build my own, going with spinach, hard-boiled eggs, sun-dried tomatoes, artichokes, and sun-dried tomato dressing. The combination of sun-dried tomatoes and the very thick sun-dried tomato dressing (which the worker added some oil to so as to make it just a little runnier) was excellent--I highly recommend it. I was surprised how huge it was, too! They definitely don't skimp on any of the ingredients, making for a massive salad that barely fits in the large serving-bowl-sized dishes. Who would've thought I'd be so full after eating a salad!?! The bowl of soup that my friend ordered was also pretty big. I also love the whole atmosphere and concept of Fiddlehead. Fresh, locally-sourced, Eco-friendly operations. And all that on top of the healthiness of all those veggies; you can't NOT feel good about eating at Fiddlehead.

Absolutely fantastic place to get a salad to eat there or to-go. The portions are beyond generous and the produce is fresh.

Overpriced and VERY underportioned. I wasn't close to full even with a large soup and almost $2 worth of bread. It was good and nutritious though, I'll give them that.

Loved it. Had the bob's cobb, with spring mix, exactly what I needed. Huge salad, with fresh veggies & meat, awesome.

Pretty darn filling with all things good for you. I think . Love the salad bowls. Soup was hearty and I'm leaving this State College find ironically looking for where the closest location is to my home. Looks like this is it so you gotta go STATE!

We stopped by FH for a dinner during the week and were pleasantly surprised! This is the place for fresh ingredient salads and wraps. The menu consists of about 5 signature salads or you can select a build your own and choose from the multitude ingredients to make your dream salad. This evening we selected from the signature salads, ordering the Latin Flavored (I can't remember the exact name) and the Gaucho salad. The first consisted of mixed greens, black beans, tortilla strips avocado, and others items then topped with a chipotle -lime dressing. The gaucho had seared strip steak, caramel onions, croutons, etc. Both salads were very tasty and were enough to make two meals out of for each of us! I felt the price was in line with the portion and fresh ingredients and will return in the future. The employees were very friendly and helpful also!

  • J A.

I love the gaucho salad with tofu subbed in for meat. They always make the salad cheaper with this substitution, which I greatly appreciate. One caveat: there is no way this salad is nutritious. I'm sure I'd be better off eating a few big macs. But, it's very tasty and feels fresh.
